Webster is home to Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg, often cited as the longest place name in the United States and the largest natural lake in Massachusetts, Connecticut or Rhode Island. The town grew around Samuel Slater's textile mills. Indian Ranch on the lake has hosted outdoor concerts since 1946.
Webster was first settled in 1731 and incorporated in 1832. Samuel Slater built textile operations in the North, East and South Villages starting in 1812, and the 1875 Bell Tower still stands from his Green Mill. After the railroad arrived in 1840, Depot Village on Main Street became the commercial center, and in the 1920s and 1930s it was called "Little New York". A compact mill town with a brick downtown, 19th century worker housing and lakefront streets on three connected ponds. Summer life centers on the lake, Memorial Beach and Wednesday night concerts by Town Hall.
