Millbury sits at the top of the Blackstone River Valley, just south of Worcester where Route 146 meets the Mass Pike. It is known for the Asa Waters Mansion, its mill villages along the Blackstone River and Singletary Brook, and The Shops at Blackstone Valley, the largest open-air shopping center in Central Massachusetts.
Millbury began as the North Parish of Sutton and became its own town on June 11, 1813, when Governor Caleb Strong signed the act of incorporation. Asa Waters II and Elijah Waters ran an armory on the Blackstone that made guns under U.S. government contracts, and the Blackstone Canal opened in 1828 with nine locks in Millbury. The town bought the 1820s Asa Waters Mansion in 1977, and residents rallied to restore it starting in 1995 instead of letting it become a parking lot. Millbury is mostly a residential town for people who work in Worcester, MetroWest and the Boston area. Daily life mixes small mill village streets and farms on the west side with big retail and highway access on the east side.
