Boylston is home to the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, a nearly 200-acre public garden with views over the Wachusett Reservoir. The reservoir itself shapes the town, with DCR shoreline land open for walking and fishing. The town is also known as the home of John B. Gough, the famous 19th-century temperance speaker.
Boylston was incorporated in 1786 and named for Ward Nicholas Boylston (1747 to 1828). The town site says it stayed an agricultural community until the mid-1950s. The 293.6-acre Hillside property, once a Digital Equipment Corporation training center, now holds the town offices, fields, trails and a disc golf course. Boylston is a small, rural town where many residents commute to Worcester and the I-495 belt. Daily life centers on the Town Common, Route 140 errands and weekends at the Botanic Garden or reservoir trails.
