Uxbridge sits at the center of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, one of the places where American textile manufacturing took off. Its mills made woolens, cashmere blends and military uniforms, including the first Air Force dress uniform, known as Uxbridge Blue. Today it is known for River Bend Farm, the Blackstone Canal towpath and a long list of historic districts.
Uxbridge was first settled in 1662 and incorporated in 1727, after splitting from the Western District of Mendon. Quakers from Smithfield, Rhode Island built the brick Friends Meetinghouse here in 1770, and George Washington stayed in town on his 1789 tour. Moses Taft built the Stanley Woolen Mill in 1852, and Robert Rogerson built the Crown and Eagle Mills on the Mumford River around 1823 to 1827. Uxbridge is a small New England town of about 14,000 people, with a mix of commuters, longtime families and farm properties. Daily life centers on Main Street, the town common and trails along the Blackstone River.
