Douglas is known for Douglas State Forest, a 5,907-acre DCR forest with swimming and boating on Wallum Lake and a boardwalk through a rare Atlantic white cedar swamp. The town sits in the Blackstone River Valley where Massachusetts meets Rhode Island and Connecticut. Each fall the Douglas Oktoberfest fills Main Street with vendors, music and rides.
Settlers from Sherborn and Natick arrived as early as 1715, and the town took the name Douglas in 1746 after Boston physician Dr. William Douglass offered money and land for free schools. An axe factory opened in East Douglas around 1790, and the Douglas Axe Manufacturing Co. stayed the main employer into the early 1900s. The railroad reached town in 1854, and whiskey maker Hiram Walker was born here. Douglas is a wooded, rural town where daily life centers on East Douglas village along Main Street and the Mumford River. Lake cottages and year-round homes line Wallum Lake, Whitin Reservoir and Manchaug Pond, and trail users come for the state forest and the SNETT.
