New Smyrna Beach is known for its surf culture, its drivable beach, and two walkable districts: Flagler Avenue on the beachside and Canal Street downtown. It sits at the north gate of Canaveral National Seashore, the longest stretch of undeveloped Atlantic coastline in Florida.
Dr. Andrew Turnbull founded the colony of New Smyrna in 1768 with more than 1,200 settlers from Menorca, Greece and Italy. The colony collapsed by 1777, and most survivors moved to St. Augustine. New Smyrna incorporated as a town in 1887, and the beachside community of Coronado Beach joined the city in 1947. Laid-back beach town with a strong local arts scene and old Florida character. Days run on surf, boats and the Indian River Lagoon.
