Sutton is home to Purgatory Chasm State Reservation, a granite gorge with rock formations called The Corn Crib, The Coffin and Lovers' Leap. The town also holds the Manchaug mill village, a National Register historic district, and Waters Farm, a 1757 hilltop homestead that now runs as a living history center above Lake Manchaug.
Sutton was founded in 1704 as an eight-mile square that once took in parts of today's Grafton, Millbury, Northbridge, Upton and Auburn. Settlers arrived in 1716 and the first town meeting was held on December 3, 1718. General Rufus Putnam was born here in 1738, and in 1826 Rhode Island industrialists formed The Manchaug Company and built cotton mills on the Mumford River, later run by B. B. & R. Knight Co., maker of the Fruit of the Loom brand, until 1921. Sutton is a rural Blackstone Valley town of villages, lakes, orchards and farm fields, with the Route 146 corridor giving quick access to Worcester and Providence. Town life centers on the common at Sutton Center, the lakes, and seasonal farm events like Waters Farm Days.
