Hudson is a former shoe-mill town on the Assabet River that has turned its Main Street into a regional dining and craft beer destination. Downtown promoters say it was named "America's Best Main Street." Breweries, a speakeasy cocktail bar, a micro-creamery and a busy festival calendar draw visitors from across MetroWest.
Hudson was a village of Marlborough called Feltonville until it was incorporated as a town in 1866 and named for Congressman Charles Hudson. From about 1850 until the last shoe factory burned in 1968 it was a mill town, with as many as 17 shoe factories, many powered by the Assabet River. On July 4, 1894, a fire started by boys with firecrackers destroyed 40 buildings in the town center. Hudson is mostly residential today, with many residents of Irish and Portuguese descent. Daily life centers on a walkable downtown where people meet for brunch, trivia nights, Saturday concerts at Town Hall and rail trail walks.
