South Daytona is a small city on the west bank of the Halifax River, tucked between Daytona Beach and Port Orange along US-1. Locals know it for Reed Canal Park, its riverfront park on South Palmetto Avenue, and a string of long-running diners and family restaurants on Ridgewood Avenue. The city celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2026.
The area began as the town of Blake, named for Boston businessman Alpheus P. Blake, and its post office opened on August 19, 1878. Daytona Beach annexed Blake after the 1926 consolidation, but residents broke away around 1938 to form the town of South Daytona. The state approved the city charter in June 1951, and a giant ground sloth fossil was found at Reed Canal Park in the 1970s. South Daytona is a quiet, mostly residential city of about 12,900 people (2020 census) with a median age near 49. Daily life centers on neighborhood parks, youth baseball and soccer, and quick trips to the beach, the Speedway and Port Orange.
