West Palm Beach is the county seat and largest city in Palm Beach County, sitting on the Lake Worth Lagoon across from the island of Palm Beach. It is known for Clematis Street, the Norton Museum of Art, the Kravis Center, and the Palm Beach International Boat Show on Flagler Drive. Brightline trains connect downtown to Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
Henry Flagler platted the town in 1893 to house workers for his grand hotels on Palm Beach, as the Florida East Coast Railway arrived. West Palm Beach incorporated on November 5, 1894, making it the oldest incorporated municipality in South Florida. Many of its historic districts, including El Cid, Flamingo Park and Northwood, were built during the 1920s land boom. Downtown draws young professionals, retirees and seasonal residents to high-rise condos and rentals within walking distance of Clematis Street and the waterfront. Nearby historic neighborhoods mix restored 1920s Mission and Mediterranean Revival homes with craftsman bungalows and a strong neighborhood association culture.
