Titusville sits on the Indian River Lagoon directly across from Kennedy Space Center, and its riverfront parks are some of the best rocket launch viewing spots in Florida. The city earned the nicknames Space City USA and Miracle City in the 1960s. It is also the gateway to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Playalinda Beach in Canaveral National Seashore.
The area was settled as Sand Point, with a post office in 1859. Henry T. Titus arrived in 1867, built the Titus House hotel in 1870, and the town was renamed Titusville in 1873. The city incorporated in 1887, and rail lines arrived in 1885 and 1892, followed by rapid growth with the space program from the late 1950s. Titusville mixes NASA and aerospace workers, retirees, and families who want river views and launch days without beach town prices. Daily life centers on the riverfront, the historic Washington Avenue downtown, and quick trips to the refuge and seashore.
