Satellite Beach is a small barrier island city with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Banana River on the other. About 40 percent of its beachfront is publicly owned, with 17 beach crossovers and three beach parks with parking. It sits just south of Patrick Space Force Base on Florida's Space Coast.
In 1956, the Hedgecock brothers and cousin Jimmy Caudle bought 130 acres of palmetto scrub and began building homes for aerospace workers at Patrick and Cape Canaveral. On August 3, 1957, 56 of 57 eligible voters approved incorporation. Evelyn Price won a $25 contest to name the town, and Percy Hedgecock served as the first mayor for 16 years. A quiet, walkable beach town of single-family streets, canal homes and oceanfront condos. Many residents are military, space industry and remote workers, plus families who want beach life with a real neighborhood feel.
