Life in Westport, CT

Westport is a Long Island Sound town known for Compo Beach, Sherwood Island State Park and a walkable downtown along the Saugatuck River. It has a long arts history, anchored by the Westport Country Playhouse, and two Metro-North stations on the New Haven Line to Grand Central.

The area was settled by the Bankside Farmers, was briefly known as Bankside in 1693 and was named Green's Farms in 1732. Daniel Nash led 130 residents in petitioning for a new town, and Westport was incorporated on May 28, 1835. In the 20th century artists, writers and New Yorkers moved in, and Paul Newman became a driving force behind the Playhouse after moving to town in 1960. Westport mixes commuters to Stamford and New York with families who stay for the beaches, the library and the downtown festivals. Daily life runs between Main Street, the Saugatuck train station area and the shoreline.
