Life in Stonington, CT

Stonington sits in the far southeast corner of Connecticut, bordered by the Mystic River, the Pawcatuck River and Long Island Sound. It takes in the east side of Mystic, home to Mystic Seaport Museum and Mystic Aquarium, plus the historic harbor village of Stonington Borough, which still hosts Connecticut's last commercial fishing fleet.

Thomas Stanton made the first European settlement here in 1649 on the banks of the Pawcatuck River, on land that was home to the Pequot people. Stonington Borough grew up around its harbor starting about 1750, and the town fought off British bombardments in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Borough sea captain Nathaniel B. Palmer is credited with sighting Antarctica at age 21. The town is really four villages: Mystic, Old Mystic, Pawcatuck and Stonington Borough. Days mix working waterfront, museum crowds in summer and quiet side streets, with easy trips over the line to Westerly, Rhode Island.
