Life in Oviedo, FL

Oviedo is known for the free-roaming chickens and roosters of its historic downtown, which the city treats as a bird sanctuary. It is also known for its celery farming past, Lake Jesup airboat country on its northern edge, and a quick drive to the University of Central Florida.

About forty families settled a mile southeast of Lake Jesup in 1875 in what was called the Lake Jesup Settlement. In 1879 postmaster Andrew Aulin named the post office Oviedo, after the city in Spain. After the Great Freeze of 1894-95 killed the citrus groves, farmers turned to celery in the Black Hammock muck, and the town incorporated in 1925. Oviedo mixes UCF-area commuters, young families and long-time residents in large subdivisions off Alafaya Trail, Lockwood Boulevard and Mitchell Hammock Road. Daily life centers on Center Lake Park and Oviedo on the Park, with rural lakefront land a few minutes north in Black Hammock.
