Needham is a Norfolk County town just west of Boston with four MBTA commuter rail stops on the Needham Line: Needham Heights, Needham Center, Needham Junction and Hersey. It is home to Olin College of Engineering on 75 acres, and its Fourth of July celebration, run by the Needham Exchange Club, has grown into one of the biggest in Greater Boston.
Farm families from Dedham petitioned in 1710 to form their own town north of the Charles River, and Governor Dudley approved the Town of Needham on November 6, 1711. In April 1881, West Needham split off to become the Town of Wellesley. Over the 1800s the town center shifted from the old center to the Great Plain, where the railroad lines from Boston arrived. Needham is a commuter suburb with a walkable downtown along Great Plain Avenue, Chapel Street and Chestnut Street, plus a second business strip on Highland Avenue in Needham Heights. Weekends revolve around youth sports at DeFazio Park and Memorial Park, the town pools at Rosemary and trails in Ridge Hill and the Town Forest.
