Mount Dora is a lakefront town on Lake Dora, part of the Harris Chain of Lakes, known for its oak canopy, antique and specialty shops, and a packed festival calendar. The city hosts more than 30 events a year, which is why it goes by Festival City. Its lighthouse at Grantham Point is one of the few inland lighthouses in Florida.
Ross C. Tremain became the first postmaster in 1880, when the settlement was called Royellou after his children Roy, Ella and Louis. The town took the name Mount Dora in 1883 for its 184 foot elevation, the same year the Alexander House opened; it became the Lakeside Inn in 1903 and still operates. The railroad arrived in 1887, and the town was chartered in 1910 with Capt. John Philip Donnelly as its first mayor. The city is home to more than 18,000 residents and keeps a walkable small town downtown with historic buildings, lake views and tree lined streets. Weekends bring festival crowds and visitors from Orlando, about 30 miles to the southeast.
