Barnstable sits at the heart of Cape Cod and is made up of seven villages that include Hyannis, Osterville, Centerville and Cotuit. It is known for Hyannis Harbor and its island ferries, the Kennedy family's summer home in Hyannis Port, and beaches on both Nantucket Sound and Cape Cod Bay, including the Sandy Neck barrier beach.
Settlers from England incorporated the Town of Barnstable in 1639, and Hyannis takes its name from Iyannough, a 17th century Wampanoag sachem. By 1840 more than 200 shipmasters had homes in Hyannis, and the railroad reached the village in 1854. Joseph P. and Rose Kennedy bought the Malcolm Cottage in Hyannis Port in 1928, and John F. Kennedy bought the house next door in 1952, later called the Summer White House. Hyannis is the busy year-round commercial and transportation center, while villages like Osterville, Cotuit and West Barnstable are quieter and mostly residential. Daily life mixes harbor and beach time in summer with a steady year-round community built around Main Streets, ponds and conservation land.
