Westerly is Rhode Island's southwestern corner, where seven miles of sandy beach run from Watch Hill to Weekapaug. It is known for Misquamicut State Beach, the seaside resort village of Watch Hill, and the pink Westerly granite once cut from its quarries.
Westerly was incorporated on May 13, 1669, as the fifth town in the colony. It was renamed Haversham in 1686 and got its old name back in 1689. The Crumb Quarry opened in 1834, and Westerly granite was shipped out for buildings and monuments until the quarries closed in the 1950s. The 1938 New England Hurricane destroyed the houses on Napatree Point and cut Sandy Point off from the mainland. About 23,000 people live here year round, and the count nearly doubles in summer. Downtown is a walkable granite and brick village on the Pawcatuck River, facing Pawcatuck, Connecticut across the water.
