St. Cloud sits on the south shore of East Lake Tohopekaliga, known locally as East Lake Toho. It is known as the Friendly Soldier City, founded as a colony for Union Civil War veterans, and for bass fishing on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. Its historic downtown and lakefront park are a short drive from the Lake Nona and Orlando job centers.
Hamilton Disston dug canals in the area and built the St. Cloud sugarcane plantation in 1886. On April 16, 1909, the Seminole Land and Investment Company founded a colony on 35,000 acres for veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic and named the downtown avenues after Union states. The city incorporated in 1915, and the 1914 G.A.R. Memorial Hall still stands on Massachusetts Avenue. Longtime residents live in the oak-shaded State Streets near the lake, while young families and retirees fill new master-planned communities on the north and east sides. Daily life centers on the lakefront, youth sports, and downtown markets.
