Jacksonville is a river city built along the St. Johns River, with Atlantic beaches on its east side. It claims the largest urban park system in the nation, from riverfront city parks to the 46,000-acre Timucuan Preserve. It is home to the Jacksonville Jaguars and NAS Jax, the birthplace of the Blue Angels.
French colonists built Fort Caroline on the St. Johns River in 1564, and a replica now stands at Fort Caroline National Memorial. The Great Fire of 1901 wiped out much of Downtown and pushed residents into new riverfront districts like Riverside and Avondale. In 1968 the city and Duval County consolidated into one government. Jacksonville is a big, spread-out city where each neighborhood has its own identity, from walkable historic districts near Downtown to riverfront suburbs in Mandarin. Daily life leans outdoors, with boating, fishing, trails and the beaches all within the city.
