Hartford is Connecticut's capital and a longtime insurance center. It is home to the Mark Twain House, the Wadsworth Atheneum, and Coltsville National Historical Park. Downtown sits on the Connecticut River, with Bushnell Park and the State Capitol at its center.
Connecticut's Old State House housed all three branches of state government from 1796 to 1878. Samuel Colt opened his Hartford armory on the Connecticut River in 1847, and its Blue Onion Dome still marks the skyline. Mark Twain wrote Adventures of Huckleberry Finn while living in Hartford, and the Charter Oak, a symbol of the city, fell in a storm on August 21, 1856. Hartford mixes state workers, insurance professionals, students, and long-rooted families from many backgrounds. Days revolve around downtown offices, Yard Goats games, theater nights, and walks in Bushnell and Elizabeth parks.
