Florida Homeowners Insurance: What Buyers Should Know

Answers from broker owners Ryan and Megan Winslow

Reviewed and updated October 3, 2026 by Ryan and Megan Winslow, Winslow Homes

Why is Florida home insurance expensive?

Hurricane exposure, roof age, and construction year drive the price. Coastal homes with older roofs cost the most to insure, and some carriers will not write them at all.

What lowers the premium?

A wind mitigation inspection documents roof straps, shutters, and impact windows, and it often lowers the wind portion of the premium. A four-point inspection covers roof, electrical, plumbing, and heating and cooling for older homes.

When should buyers get quotes?

Get quotes during your inspection period, before your deposit goes hard. An insurance surprise after that point puts your deposit at risk.
