About Duck Key

Life in Duck Key

Duck Key is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Monroe County, on an island in the middle Florida Keys. It sits oceanside of U.S. 1 near mile marker 61, between Conch Key and Grassy Key. The 2020 census counted 727 residents.

George Gauld named the island Duck Key on an 1775 chart, and salt ponds were worked here in the 1800s. The railroad bypassed it in 1912 and the rebuilt Overseas Highway bypassed it again after the 1935 hurricane. Developer Bryan W. Newkirk created the modern island in the 1950s. A wooden bridge opened in 1952 and the causeway opened to cars on January 2, 1953. He built five islands called Indies, Centre, Harbour, Plantation and Yacht Club, with about 10 miles of paved roads and four stone bridges.

Today the island is shared between Hawks Cay Resort and a residential community of 376 homes. The Duck Key Property Owners' Association, Club Duck Key and the Duck Key Security Advisory Board serve residents.

Before you buy

Buying in Duck Key: what Ryan and Megan check

  • Duck Key is unincorporated Monroe County, so permits and land use go through Monroe County. The county owns more than 70 of the island's 250 lots, so check who owns a lot before you buy.
  • Individual homes use septic tanks, while the resort has its own treatment plant. Ask Monroe County about the septic status and any required upgrades on the property.
  • Hurricane Irma in September 2017 left the island without power, sewer or water, and Monroe County ordered an evacuation. Review wind and flood insurance quotes before you make an offer.
  • The Duck Key Property Owners' Association and optional Club Duck Key both exist. Ask for the association rules and fee schedule, and ask Monroe County about vacation rental rules for the address.
